Rat is An Anagram for Art

There was much excitement amongst lovers of underground art when it was announced that Jeffrey Deitch, former owner of Deitch Projects, was to starting running MOCA...but Mr. Deitch disappointed art lovers of all forms with his poorly received first show (featuring work by Dennis Hopper). At this point it seemed as though the game was lost both for Mr. Deitch and those who had expected better from him, but then he announced "Art in the Streets", the largest museum street art show to date...needless to say, everybody, including myself, went wild.

The show was not a letdown, in fact, it far exceeded my expectations, which were extremely high as I am a huge street art fan...actually that's a lie, I'm only like 5 feet tall...ahaha get it?! Sorry, that was low even by my standards... Anyways, the show was really too vast to even really comprehend, put aside share online, but here are a few highlights










Banksy's take on Rodney King, a super realistic sculpture by the man of many pseudonyms, Barry McGee/Twist/Twister/Twisto/Twisty/Ray Fong/Lydia Fong/R. Fong/Robert Pimple/Bernon Vernon/Ray Virgil









A large-scale installation by Margaret Killigan, whom death took much to early and an even large, unbelievably whimsical installation by Os Gemeos...seriously that thing was amazing; there were drums with faces painted on them and little window boxes with toys and of course a house sticking off of it (which you can kind of see above)










A detail of the Kenny Scharf car, which might just be the coolest thing I've ever seen and Mister Cartoon's ice cream truck, which is also very high up on the my list of amazing things...I'd seen it twice before and I still spent like 20 straight minutes staring at it

"Into the Bleak"

I went today to see Clare Roja's show at Prism Gallery, very excited and eagerly anticipating, but nothing could have prepared me for what I saw...It was literally one of the best shows I have seen! She had these gigantic wonderful paintings with abstract shapes and these fantastic very small paintings of women and flowers, that all just made me melt. Also, the installation was fantastic, with art covering every surface including the stair railing and the ceiling piping.

I could not recommend going to see this more!

"Delusions of Grandeur"

Oh Kukula...could her work be anymore whimsical? Anymore fabulously haunting? Well, the work from her show opening TONIGHT at Corpo Nason makes me think not!

"49 Days"

I know I say this about a lot of different people, but if I really had to pick a favourite artist, it might just be Yumiko Kayukawa! Lucky for me, she is having a solo show in LA at the most awesome place EVER, La Luz De Jesus!!!

“Fashionable Aftertaste Without End”

I find very few things as dangerously enticing as the work of Natalia Fabia...her work is so mysterious and lifelike! Thus, I am of course ecstatic for her solo show that will be opening TONIGHT at Corey Helford Gallery!!!

"Familiar Strangers"

The very nice owner of Lebasse Projects gallery in Culver City let me take a "sneak peak" of the Yoskay Yamamoto show that opened Saturday night...and wow! It was spectacular, can't recommend seeing it more! (it runs through July 10)
